The presence of air pollution in your immediate surrounding can be made tangible by comparing routes of e.g. your daily commutes by foot or bike (to school, to work), for recreation (jogging, biking), etc. A lot of advances have been made on the topic of hi-resolution air quality modelling which is detailed enough to make a scientifically sound evaluation to estimate which two or more alternative routes is healthier from the perspective of air pollution.

By making an API available to (routing) app developers which gives access to the public sector high resolution modelled air quality data and proposing a scientifically sound methodology for the evaluation of different routes, existing routing apps can be improved to better meet consumer needs. The development of an API for calculating the healthiest route (for cyclists and pedestrians), will lead to better routing apps, less discomfort for people vulnerable to bad air quality and increase the awareness of places with high pollution levels within the direct surroundings of citizens. The API will provide a continuous raster dataset in addition to guidelines on how to interact with the API and a clear methodology on how to perform the calculation.

During this session, I will present some contextual information about air quality, present our Hi-resolution air quality models, highlight some of the innovative data processes we are developing to further improve our models (such as Street Canyon correction algorithms), explain our API and WCS related to the healthiest route, highlight a number of the results of our data-analyses, including a comparison of air quality on different types of routes for different air pollutants, discuss the results of our model validation based on trajectory air quality measurements, compare different models in terms of temporal and spatial resolution. Also our vision on cooperation with the private sector will be highlighted and the role of the scientific publication we are currently developing that can serve as a “manual” for companies and organisations to implement our API will be discussed.
